Intro to Chiangmai

5 things Singaporeans will enjoy about Chiangmai:

1. There are only 3 or 4 high-rise buildings in the main Chiangmai area. Even then, they're only 12-15 storeys high. Everything else is shophouses and short buildings. What a refreshing change from Singapore!

2. You can get internet access at 20 baht (about $0.90SGD) per HOUR! Some places count by the minute even!

3. Chiangmai has a cosmopolitan selection of food, from Thai to Japanese to Indian to Western. The Gallery, Thailand's purported 'best Thai restaurant' is located in Chiangmai. All the eateries we tried had excellent food and most were set in elegant & beautiful settings. Give Antique House a try - it's a Thai restaurant set in a lovely dark teak wood house built in traditional Lanna style. And don't miss Siam Tea Celadon, a tea & sandwich place along Ta Phae Road that has charming interior decor, with carved lattices, green plants, large french windows and high ceilings.

4. The night market in Chiangmai is cheaper than Bangkok! And... the day market in Chiangmai (called Wororot, it is actually a market for locals) is cheaper than the night market!

5. Your hotel can arrange for a chauffeur-driven car to bring you shopping at the outlet strip of road outside Chiangmai called Sankampoeng Road. You can buy jewellry, silk, wood & silver products, food stuffs, paper, celadon & furniture for pretty good prices. And the chauffeur-driven car only costs 300 baht ($13 SGD) for half a day!
