Hands down, these are the BEST CORNFLAKES IN THE WORLD. These cornflakes make Post taste like cardboard. (Eat dirt, Post! Bwahahaha!) See the picture above? That is THE BOX. What a designer box huh:

And get this, the actual cornflakes LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE THE BOX. Yes, even the dried strawberries in the cornflakes look EXACTLY LIKE THE BOX. (They're NOT white and decrepit like the Post ones.) That is why it didn't really make sense for me to take another picture of the actual cornflakes. And the taste... *writer pauses as she recaptures moment of eating cornflakes at breakfast table this morning*... It is really simply *cornflakes heaven*!
I was first introduced to these cornflakes by Yinnycat (THANK YOU MY FRIEND). That was over Christmas and by the time I made it down to Marks & Spencer with the intention to buy up all the cornflakes they had, someone had already beat me to it - these cornflakes were sold out! (Have you ever heard of cornflakes being sold out?)
Then recently, I found boxes of these cornflakes sitting pretty in the Marks & Spencer @ Wheelock Place. There they were, smiling at me while ignorant shoppers sauntered by. I immediately felt like I was part of a secret club, one of the chosen few who knew how amazingly delicious these cornflakes were. So, I bought 3 boxes - two "Strawberry & Almond Crunch" and one "Deliciously Nutty Crunch". See:
Husband & I are crazy about these cornflakes. But we have a rule in the house, which goes along the lines of "Thou shalt not open a new box of anything without finishing the current box first." So, for example, we refrain from opening a new jar of honey if there's still a jar of honey in the fridge. This rule is economical, sensible and all, but with these cornflakes, it was really hard to stick to it. There we were, eating our still-yet-to-finish box of Post Banana Crunch, trying desperately to eat bigger portions so that the box would hurry-up-and-finish-already, wondering irrationally why the box of cornflakes seemed bottomless... and then finally this morning, it was as if the sky turned blue after a neverending period of stormy weather - we had finished the Post and with maniacal glee, we tore open the "Deliciously Nutty Crunch" and sank into the warm bliss of cornflake heaven.

"Deliciously Nutty Crunch" consists of rich toffee flavour oat clusters with almonds, brazil nuts and pecans. It is excellent. But my all-time favourite remains "Strawberry & Almond Crunch" - light oat clusters with crunch almonds & deliciously indulgent strawberry slices. Ooooo....
OK, so all readers who are located in countries with Marks & Sparks, go forth and buy these cornflakes! And don't say I didn't share my little secret and make your breakfast loads better! (Each box is SGD$7.90 - a bit more expensive than Post, but worth it!) And for those readers who are unfortunate enough to have never heard of Marks & Sparks, do remember these cornflakes. One day, when you travel and you see these cornflakes, you'll want to buy them and ship them back in bulk. Trust me.

Ha ha. Not quite push-ups yet. But look how far he can hold his chest up! My strong little baby. ^__^
Am not sure why but have been getting a lot of queries about what Daniel is eating these days. So, decided to do a post on this! ^__^
Presenting ... Daniel's diet! Being quite adventurous when it comes to her own diet, this mommy has been striving to give Daniel as wide a range of tastes as possible when it comes to his first solids. So, since early January, Daniel has tasted lesee... homemade apple sauce, pear sauce, peach sauce, homemade pureed carrot, pumpkin, cauliflower, peas, plain rice cereal and most recently, yogurt! Can I just say that this kid is G-R-E-E-D-Y? He eats just about everything, though sadly, he does not like avocado or broccoli that much. Those two food items have been given The Stamp of REJECTION for now, which is unfortunate, since they are so healthy and rich in what babies need. Daniel's daily menu currently looks like this:
1. Breakfast: breast milk (20min), followed by 6 spoons of yogurt mixed with 5 spoons of homemade fruit sauce
2. Lunch: breast milk (20min), followed by 5 spoons of rice cereal mixed with 5 spoons of pureed veggies
3. Dinner: breast milk (20min), followed by 5 spoons of rice cereal mixed with 4 spoons of homemade fruit sauce.
(spoons refer to those teeny weeny baby spoons.)
The little squidge keeps lapping up everything I throw at him, so much so that it got to the point where I actually emailed the random paediatrician we visited all of 2 times in the past 6 months and, in a tone of unveiled desperation, after the usual introduction which went along the lines of "Hi, you may not remember me but I saw you about 3 months ago with a fat kid named Daniel...", asked for some kind of weaning guide to help me figure out if I was feeding him TOO MUCH. The kind lady sent me some reading materials over snail mail and after studying them closely, I was relieved to confirm that Daniel is not eating too much at all. Phew. (He still is a GREEDY PIG in my eyes though. Che...)
Some parents have given me The Eyebrow when they hear I'm feeding my kid yogurt. "Is that safe?" they ask as politely as possible. Well, yes. It is. In fact, it's very very good for kids. Unlike cow's milk, the lactose in yogurt has broken down, so it is safe for lactose-intolerant kids. Furthermore, yogurt is rich in fat, protein and calcium, all stuff that growing infants need more than carbos, which is what porridge & rice cereal are primarily. (Did you know that yogurt has more calcium than milk?) For more info on yogurt for infants, go here. I use plain non-fat free yogurt and mix it with yummy homemade fruit sauce, e.g., applesauce. Daniel loves it! And I have to admit, it's actually pretty tasty stuff! I love it too!
One of the great things about preparing Daniel's food is discovering how easy and delicious fruit and vegetable dishes can be on their own! Take applesauce. It's simply scrummy - and so easy to prepare! Or, pumpkin! Golly... I could eat this stuff all day!
I read somewhere that it's not advisable to give your kid sugar, salt or honey for the first year. So, I was naturally appalled to find that most convenience baby foods on the supermarket shelves, including well-respected brands like Gerber and Nestle, add those exact condiments to their baby rice cereals and other powders/jarred foods. What's up with that? This one Gerber cereal I studied was "recommended for infants 4 months and above" and listed "SOYA SAUCE" as one of its key ingredients. ???? Speechless.
Well, whatever it is, since I have time on my hands, I'm happy to prepare Daniel's meals largely from scratch. It doesn't take that much time to make applesauce - 20mins at the most, 15 mins of which is steaming the fruit and can be done while I'm busy feeding him milk. The only convenience food I've used faithfully so far is Heinz Rice Cereal for 4 months and above. It's plain rice cereal with no sugar/salt and it's by far the BEST rice cereal, in terms of it not clumping together or failing to dissolve in room temperature water. (I could never get those Si Sen Brown Rice Powder cereals to actually dissolve in water without clumping. It was like feeding Daniel starch balls! Aigh!)
If you're interested in finding out more about preparing baby food from scratch, go here (this link was recommended by one of my blog readers & old friend Emily! Yo Em!) Or, if you have any tips on what and how to feed infants, do drop me a comment! I look forward to feeding Daniel less mushy, more well-formed foods that he can chew on. But not sure what is advisable or good for starters? Any tips? Do let me know ya? Would appreciate any help. Baby fresh food rules! Yea!

Dear Daniel,
It has been a joy to take care of you thus far. I thank God that you are an easy baby and so smiley too! I pray that God will continue to watch after you and make His Presence felt in your life from an early age. I pray that you will grow in the wisdom and knowledge of the Lord and fear Him who has created you and sustains you each and every day. Today, you are 6 months old! You can roll, you can sit up, you can smile and laugh. And, you can eat semi solids! Congratulations! You used to cry when you were held by strangers but now you allow everybody to carry you as long as you are not tired. You used to wail very loud when you were hungry. Er... you still do that! (Well, some thing never change! ^__^) You are changing so fast I almost cannot keep up! But do know that the one thing constant in your life always will be God and His Love for you. Happy 6th month Daniel!

Ever since Thai Noodle House along Coronation Road closed down, I've been cooking some of the Thai dishes that I first tasted there - e.g., Thai Olive Rice (homestyle) and Baked Prawns and Vermicelli. The latter was what I cooked for dinner tonight - I am really very pleased with how this dish is so easy to make - I managed to prepare it within 40 mins (15 mins of which was sitting around twiddling my thumbs as I waited for the baking to be complete). And it's absolutely scrummy - I couldn't stop eating the vermicelli which is so fragrant & tasty. Gosh... have quite a full tummy now. Anyway, here's the recipe - enjoy!
Baked prawns and vermicelli
300g prawns
150g vermicelli ("tanghoon")
4 cups chicken stock
1 bulb garlic
10-15 sprigs of chinese parsley
1 white onion, finely sliced
2ts sugar
1tb light soya sauce
1tb dark soya sauce
1. Preheat oven for 200 degrees C. Boil the chicken stock in a small pot. Throw the vermicelli in when stock is boiling. Cook for a few minutes then turn off the fire and let the vermicelli soak in the stock. *
2. In the meantime, remove the roots of the chinese parsley ** and chop the stems finely. Unpeel the garlic and break into cloves. Blitz the chopped parsley stems and garlic in a grinder/food processor till fine.
3. Heat some oil in a wok. Fry the garlic and parsley mixture till fragant. Add the sliced onions and fry till slightly soft. Then, add the vermicelli, sugar and soya sauces. Mix thoroughly for a few minutes. (Now see if you can resist tasting the vermicelli - it is addictive!)
4. Put the lovely fragrant vermicelli into a claypot or a baking tray. Place the prawns on top and cover. Bake in oven for 15-20 mins or until the prawns are done.*** When done, sprinkle some parsley leaves on top and serve immediately.
* Most recipes will ask you to soak the vermicelli in water. I use chicken stock as it adds flavour to the vermicelli. Also, by allowing the vermicelli to soak in the stock, it becomes quite "juicy" and this prevents the vermicelli from drying up when it is baked in step 4.
** When removing the roots, cut as close to the roots as possible. This is because you don't want to throw away any of the parsley stems - that's where the fragrance and taste lies: in the stems!
*** If you don't want to bake the prawns and vermicelli, you can skip the whole of step 4. Simply panfry the prawns in some garlic and add a bit of chicken stock. Then, serve the prawns on top of the vermicelli.
Cheers!
Daniel: Hello, notice anything different about me in these pictures?

Daniel: Yes, I am sitting up by myself! All at the tender age of 5 1/2 months! I started sitting up a few weeks ago. At first, I could only do it for a few minutes, but today I sat up for a good 25 minutes! Sitting up is fun - I get to be taller than my toys and look down on them. And I'm so fascinated by sitting up, it occupies my time and mommy doesn't have to entertain me - which is good for her! Yay! Of course, sometimes, I still fall on my face or side - but oh well, congratulate me ya? ^__^
